A
Region full of Art and History
... just follow the Maurienne guide
As a region of art and history the
Maurienne is part of the national network of towns and
regions of artistic and historic interest.
The wealth of heritage in the Maurienne valley, the
effort put into restoring this by local authorities
with the help of Governmental, Regional and Departmental
offices, and the decision to put quality first, have
earned for our valley the label of “Region
of Art and History”, awarded by the national
Department for Architecture and Heritage through an
agreement signed on 15 December 1991 between the Ministry
of Culture and the F.A.C.I.M.
association.
The principles behind this agreement
are as follows: architecture steeped in the notion of
heritage, promotion of active tourism, the wish to share
a passion for discovery and understanding of our environment
with the younger populations, and the obligation to
employ staff whose knowledge is constantly being updated.
This label also reflects the skills and quality of our
guides and lecturers, as well as those in charge of
promoting our heritage. Today, the network comprises
over 130 towns and regions offering you an insight into
heritage across France.

A valley steeped in art, history and tradition
With its
prehistoric remains, rock engravings, sculpted devils
and treasures from the Baroque age, the Maurienne is
full to the brim with authentic popular art.
Traditional art and crafts can be found everywhere,
along with the delicious produce of the mountains.
The hospitality and warmth of the Maurienne people is
well known thanks to the appreciative words left by
Hannibal, Montaigne and Napoleon.
